PPTA Commends Governor Shapiro’s Continued Commitment to Public Transit; Supports Long-Term Transportation Infrastructure Investment

Harrisburg, PA (February 4, 2026) – The Pennsylvania Public Transportation Association (PPTA) applauds Governor Shapiro for his continued commitment to public transportation and for championing investments that strengthen communities across the Commonwealth. Public transportation is essential infrastructure and a powerful economic driver, connecting Pennsylvanians to opportunity, supporting employers and local economies statewide, and helping residents stay connected to work, healthcare, and community life.

Public transit agencies across Pennsylvania are at a crossroads. Without sustained, dedicated funding, providers will face difficult decisions that could reduce service and limit mobility for the people and communities who rely on transit the most. Pennsylvania’s transit systems need stable, long-term resources to ensure safe, affordable transportation remains available and reliable.

“Public transportation isn’t just a big-city issue; it impacts every community in Pennsylvania,” said Kim Whetsell, Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Public Transportation Association. “These proposed investments will strengthen transit service in all 67 counties, including smaller local systems and Pennsylvania’s Shared Ride program, serving older adults, people with disabilities, and veterans statewide. In many rural communities, Shared Ride isn’t a convenience; it’s the only connection. Without it, people lose access to the places they need to go and the independence that comes with it.”

PPTA also emphasizes that public transit is not separate from the broader transportation network. Transit providers rely on safe, well-maintained roads and bridges to do the important work of keeping Pennsylvanians moving. A holistic approach to transportation investment is essential to support the full network, strengthen connections between communities, and ensure Pennsylvania’s economy continues to grow.

PPTA urges the General Assembly to advance a long-term solution that strengthens transportation infrastructure across the Commonwealth and provides the stable, predictable funding needed to keep Pennsylvania moving.
